Warm thanks to Roger and his team for organising another wonderful painting competition on 29th July in London! Great spirits all round despite the rain.
It turned out to be a glorious morning followed by downpours. Had decided to limit aspirations to a drawing rather than a painting, partly as moving in this direction anyway- towards less is more, and partly as rapid changes in sun/ humidity / rain complicate watercolour painting even more than the everpresent myriad influences (paper weight and surface texture; angle; amount of surface and deep moisture; saturation of paint) . Chose a side view of the local church, attracted by the strong dark/light contrasts in the horizontals and verticals . That said , one of the prize winners used rain drops to great effect in a watercolour of the Serpentine!
Aaron of Johnsons Picture Framers kindly suggested a dark grey mount, plain ash frame and framed it at high speed just in time to be hung at Chelsea Town Hall for the exhibition next day.
