Art can never match the extraordinary beauty and complexity of nature. However, it feels imperative to explore, contemplate and attempt to convey some of that on paper.

Alberto Giacometti continued to draw over his paintings correcting and improving his work, as his perception changed. He wrote The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity. Figurative paintings/drawings are the outcome of observation, and by products of the goal to see clearly, reflecting on light and shadow, colour, matter, and meaning.

Andy Warhol said: Don’t think about making art, just get it done.  Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it.  While they are deciding, make even more art.

As in everything, first impressions can be misleading. Our head tells us we see one thing, but it  may take years to unpeel the layers of conditioning and assumptions projected onto the world around us, to begin to see clearly. The images in this gallery are stepping stones to this end.

After 30 years as a Speech and Language Therapist, with the last 15 also as a Mediator in Educational Special Needs, her focus has shifted to creativity and its role in wellbeing. Starting with sketching and painting from life in her mid 30’s, preferably outside and using naturally occurring waterbased pigments and inks, she now also uses non toxic water-soluble oils and runs workshops.

Portraiture became a particular focus in March 2020 during the Covid 19 lockdown, following Sir TomCroft’s initiative to show appreciation for NHS workers by donating portraits. One of her 4 portraits (DrMichael Queffurus performing surgery) was selected for inclusion in the subsequent book Portraits for NHS Heroes, published by Bloomsbury, 2020, to raise funds for NHS Charities together. Another was included by the Mall Gallery in Figurative Art Now, and won an award in the Wales Contemporary International Fine Art Exhibition - 2023.

Please get in touch with her if you would like to discuss commissioning a portrait.
